Free Mode FAQ
This page answers common questions about what happens in free bridge mode and offline mode.
What is free bridge mode?
Free bridge mode means you are connected to Foundry, but using the free version of the Companion Bridge module. You can load your character and you will receive updates from the server, however, interactions from to app to the srever are unavailable.
Typical result:
- Most sheet edits still work locally in the app.
- Server-executed actions are blocked.
What is offline mode?
Offline mode means there is no active Foundry socket connection.
Typical result:
- You can keep using cached actor data.
- All server-side actions are unavailable.
Can I still load my character in free mode?
Yes, when connected.
In offline mode, you cannot pull fresh server data, but you can load a previously cached local actor.
Can I still update HP, counters, and toggles?
Yes, usually as local-only updates in restricted modes.
These updates are reflected in the app UI and local cache behavior, but not on the Foundry server or in other connected sessions.
Can I cast spells in free mode?
You can still use local spell tracking behavior (for example spell slots), but remote cast/use actions that require bridge support are blocked.
Can I do short rest and long rest in free mode?
Not as server-executed actions.
Rest actions are premium online features and are blocked in free/offline modes because they rely on server connectivity.
What does "Saved locally" mean?
It means your change was accepted in the app state but not executed as a server update in Foundry.
Can I still use favorites in free/offline mode?
Yes. Favorites can still be changed locally and used for quick access.
Why do actions suddenly stop syncing during play?
Common causes:
- GM-host browser session closed or disconnected.
- Connection dropped and app switched to offline mode.
- Current bridge tier does not allow that action.
How can I quickly tell what mode I am in?
Mode indicators:
- No specific indicator at the top of the sheet: premium online
- Local Mode: Free Tier indicator at the top of the sheet: free mode online
- Local Mode: Offline indicator at the top of the sheet: offline mode
Best practice for free mode sessions
- Treat the app as a fast local tracker.
- Keep notes of server-critical outcomes to apply once fully connected.
